February 02 Hollywood comes to MelbourneHollywood comes to MelbourneLook out for your favourite Melbourne haunts on TV next year when the world’s most expensive mini-series, The Pacific, airs on HBO and Channel Seven. The $230 million production is currently being filmed at Melbourne’s Central City Studios in the Docklands, where a huge World War II battleship has been constructed. Film crews have been spotted on location at Flinders Street Station, in Rathdowne Street, North Carlton and Bank Street, South Melbourne, at the Abbotsford Convent, Victoria Park, Alphington Park, Melbourne High School as well as at the historic Victorian Railway Hotel. The You Yangs near Geelong have been transformed into war fields. The Pacific, produced by HBO Films, in association with Tom Hanks’ Playtone and Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks Television studios, tracks the intertwined stories of three US Marines (played by Jon Seda, Joseph Mazzello, James Badge Dale) across the Pacific – from the first clash with the Japanese in the jungles of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, to Papua New Guinea, Palau and onto Japanese home soil at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. When filming wraps in March this year, it is estimated that the project will have injected $150 million into the Victorian economy and created up to 4000 full-time and part-time jobs, including jobs for Australian actors Gary Sweet, Isabel Lucas, Bill Hunter, Sam Parsonson and Linda Cropper. In addition, the experience and knowledge gained by Victorian film crews working on this large scale production will significantly increase the capabilities of our local film industry. The Pacific is just one of a number of high profile projects filmed in Melbourne recently, including: Ghost Rider, Charlotte’s Web, Where the Wild Things Are, Rogue, Romulus My Father and it has just been announced that Knowing, Nicholas Cage’s next feature will start filming in Melbourne in March.
